“It is important to celebrate the heritage months such as Black History Month because they help better explain our heritage and culture.” – freshman Cooper Brann

Black History month is a month where the many achievements of black Americans are celebrated throughout the United States. CK’s community is a very diverse one; there are people with, black, Asian, white, and Hispanic backgrounds.

Freshman Cooper Bran stated,” I think it is important to show how much African Americans struggled for their freedom.”

Senior Jay-C Villava-Cua explained, “It is important to celebrate Black History Month, because it helps us to show equality, and to show that you could do anything no matter the color of your skin or race.”

Bran added, “It’s to remind us of the accomplishments from many Black Americans that helped develop their freedoms and their rights.”

Villava-Cua said, “We celebrate this month to show the many accomplishments that have been made because of the Black Americans, in our country, and as well as in other countries.”

The United States is not the only country that dedicates a month to Black History; this also occurs in countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom. Black History month was not called Black History month originally, it was  first  called, “Negro History Week” when it was declared by Carter G. Woodson that every second week of February would be celebrated to commemorate the hardships of all the black men and women of that time frame. The celebration has continued ever since and has inspired the creation of many heritage-based holidays to commemorate the history of  race and gender.

Some of the holidays celebrated include Asian Pacific American Heritage month, Jewish American Heritage Month, Gay Lesbian Pride Month. The main reason that these holidays and celebrations even exist is that for many people, it is important to celebrate what they personally value and want to give that recognition  to the rest of the people in their community in hopes to spread awareness to the achievements of the people of their race or gender.
