“I don’t think sharing the cafeteria and theater with the middle school is a bad idea. It does definitely take up less space. Schools will be combined pretty much in that aspect. I would imagine they have a bigger cafeteria and theater than what we have now.” – Jason Cox

CKHS is an old and beloved school, worn and aged, soon to be replaced. The new school being planned and built soon will have lots of new additions and fixes. Some students have ideas of what could benefit CKHS in the new era. Senior Ariel Jose shared some of her least favorite things about the current CKHS: “Three of the faucets in the upstairs girls’ bathroom don’t even work. I need to wash my hands!” She also shared one of her favorite aspects: “I like the library, it’s more clean and put together than any other room in the entire building. I also love the couches, they’re really cozy.”

Senior Jason Cox had quite a few things to say about CKHS after his years of experience here. Some things he disliked were the parking lots and boys’ locker room. “The parking lot isn’t very organized. Especially the senior lot being mostly mud and dirt. There is not a lot of visitor parking, too. The locker room is just terrible, half the lockers don’t even work. I remember right after first semester when I returned second, there was just clothes everywhere. It was disgusting.”

Cox also shared his most favorite thing about CKHS saying, “It has an automotive program.” Cox said this as he shared knowledge that there won’t be an auto shop in the new school. Cox believes it is an important skill that can be learned which helps with the real world and said, “I am pretty upset about it being removed, it’s definitely shaped what I want to do after high school. It’s helped me understand the real world. It definitely could help students more in case they have a problem with their vehicle, instead of having go to a car company and get ripped off pretty much, you’ll know what to do, like an oil change and stuff. Changing your tire with a spare.”

Cox feels every high school should have the auto shop opportunity. “I think it should be an essential class. The teacher [Tyler Hunt] doesn’t just talk about automotive, he helps you get into the real world and understand it better. There’s always one or two guest speakers that come, and they pretty much show you what paths you can find and stuff in life. There are only a few other schools in the district with an automotive program. Olympic doesn’t even have an automotive program anymore, they dropped it this year. It’s not just for automotive, some students take it for other things, like some knowledge, so they’re not clueless.”

Time will pass and the new school will soon be on its way. Whatever may happen, CKHS will stay the same, no matter the building. The staff and students are truly the base of the building. They make one Cougar nation.
