A glimpse of Mexico, down the street

As our town of Silverdale grows larger and larger every year, we become home to many different backgrounds and lifestyles especially since we are a military town, but as we start to house more and more people, it can be a little hard for people of different backgrounds to feel more at home. One new store is definitely here to fix some of that problem.

Made in Mexico market is a plethora of household items that many kids and adults with a Hispanic/Latino background grew up with, or still use today. There is everything from candy made in Guadalajara, to sodas from Tijuana.

The shop is located where Silverdale Cyclery used to be, and since the store is so new with only being 6 months into business, one of their workers, Paola, says that they are doing just fine here in Silverdale.

“It’s been doing pretty good,” Said Paola. “A lot of people like our chicken here, and we used to have tacos, that was really big.”

They claimed that the biggest money maker there was in fact the food, and it’s pretty hard to argue with that. Upon walking into the store there are  shelves and shelves of spices and a good selection of produce you couldn’t just get at Safeway or Walmart. This isn’t even to mention the hot food sold here; everything from Elotes and Tamales, to Agua Frescas and Tostilocos, this store has it all.

It is surprising that it’s taken this long for a shop like this to pop up for our Hispanic/Latino community in Silverdale, but it’s stores like these that remind us that our differences in cultures should bring us together and help make a difference in making our community a better place. For everyone.
