Making Coffee, Giving Hope – The Coffee Oasis

The Bremerton Cafe was quaintly located a couple blocks from the ferry terminal.

Coffee Oasis works in the community to provide for teens and young adults in need, CKHS students included. Reaping the rewards of helping those in need, the Coffee Oasis will be celebrating “20 years of changing the world for homeless youth.”

Baristas Tyler and Alyssa have both served at the Bremerton Coffee Oasis location for a little over a year. Tyler said that he “always wanted to be a barista, but it was the ministry side of Coffee Oasis that truly distinguished working [there] over Starbucks.” Alyssa also chimed in – regarding her employment – saying, “okay I can do this,” at the thought of working for a coffee shop with a mission.

The coffeehouse vibe entrances the customer the moment they enter.

Before the partying came the work: Dave and Cindy Frederick found a great need in Bremerton. After purchasing the Coffee Oasis, the couple used it as a “place for serving youth.” They provided a place for young adults – regardless of past or present – through their first Teen Night, in 1997, and it has evolved into “resources for street youth (showers, laundry, clothing and food), youth centers, job training, mentoring, case management, a shelter and more,” extending beyond Bremerton.

Feathered and foamed, the barista left a unique design underneath the to-go lid. During your next visit, try the honey and cinnamon Mountaineer.

First comes the people, then comes the coffee. Not only is the Coffee Oasis dedicated to providing quality resources to under-resourced communities, but to their customers as well. Using only directly traded and locally roasted coffee, the Coffee Oasis says that the locally bought coffee positively affects the farmers and their communities, while “one bag of Coffee Oasis coffee provides one day of a youth’s job internship” in the Kitsap County community.

They provide services to the community through street and school outreach, belonging and resources, case management and mentoring, job training and internships, shelter and stability. The Coffee Oasis has positively impacted the Kitsap County community with faith, hope, and service-oriented attitudes and actions – and continues to flourish since its beginning 20 years ago. Now it’s time for YOU to be part of the action! How can you join the altruistic movement?
