Opinion: Unfortunately, ‘New Girl’ is Old News

My opinion after Netflix removed the well loved show “New Girl” from their streaming services despite its popularity.

On April 17, 2023, the popular series “New Girl” was removed from Netflix after almost ten years of streaming.

Because Netflix wasn’t the original production company for the show, all 149 episodes were removed. It was created by the 20th Century, owned by Disney, and originally aired on Fox. Netflix’s streaming rights had expired, and they were once again forced to remove one of their most popular shows.

“New Girl” was first airing in September of 2011, and the pilot episode had over ten million viewers. Since then, it has continued to be one of the most popular binging sitcoms.

All is not lost however, because as of April 17 the entire seven seasons of “New Girl” have been released on both Peacock and Hulu. Disney owns Hulu, and would rather have their show on their own platform.

The show follows Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) as she moves into a new phase of her life. Her ex-boyfriend Spencer (Iam Wolterstorff) cheated on her, and she packed up and moved into an apartment with Nick Miller (Jake Johnson), Winston Schmidt (Max Greenfeild), and Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.), with an additional roommate added later Winston Bishop (Lamorne Morris).

Jess is a funky bubbly girl who is just learning how to live. She quickly befriends all of her roommates, and the five of them are almost inseparable. With her best friend CeCe Parekh (Hannah Simone), Jess goes through the ups and downs of life.

“New Girl” is a comedy sitcom, and every character is part of the comedic relief. While viewers are upset that their favorite show is being removed from Netflix, they are relieved that it will live on through different streaming services.

I am a huge fan of the show, and I am very lucky that I have Hulu as well to continue watching it. Netflix has a history of removing shows that are popular among teenagers, and it’s incredibly frustrating.

However, it’s not Netflix’s fault. They get backlash from their viewers, but when the rights to a show expire there’s not much that can be done. Netflix also has to make room for new shows to be added in order to stay relevant.

While it does make sense, it’s still upsetting to fans like me. “New Girl” will live on in the hearts of their viewers, no matter what platform it’s available on.
