Review: ‘We Have a Ghost’
A new but unorthodox ghost movie called “We Have A Ghost”, written and directed by Christopher Landon, was released on Netflix in late February. This movie has a Casper kind of perspective of its ghost “Ernest” who becomes internet famous after a family discovers him in their attic, first by their youngest son who bonds with the ghost eventually becoming friends throughout the movie.
To summarize this movie, the family finds a ghost named Ernest (David Harbour) in their attic, they video tape him and get internet famous. Which brings a traveling medium show to their house for an interview. The kid that originally found the ghost makes it his mission to help the ghost pass on to the afterlife and runs away with his neighbor to try and find out what happened to the ghost. They found and went to the house of an old friend of Ernests when he was alive, but before they left a horror writer brought the viral videos to her old Deputy Director at the CIA which resulted in them getting caught at that house.
The writer’s name is Dr. Leslie Monore (Tig Notaro), at the time set in the movie she was labeled a horror writer but in her past she was a paranormal scientist. She ran an experimental program called ‘Wizard Clip’ before it was shut down for lack of funding. Her CIA boss and Deputy Director was Arnold Schipley (Steve Coulter). When Schipley saw the viral videos, the program was reinstated to capture Ernest.
The family members were Frank Presley (Antony Mackie), Melanie Presley (Erica Ash), Fulton Presley (Niles Fitch), and Kevin Presley (Jahi Winston). The medium was Judy Romano (Jennifer Coolidge) and Kevin’s neighbor and friend was Joy Yoshino (Isabella Russo). Kevin is the son that found Ernest and helped him.
This movie is 2 hours and 7 minutes long, but worth it to see a family friendly movie with a good story line. It is directed and written by Christopher Landon. The original idea Landon based the movie on was the 2017 short story “Ernest” by Geoff Manaugh. Landon has made films like “Happy Death Day,” “Happy Death Day 2U,” and “Freaky”. This is the 20th film he has been involved with and the 6th film he has directed.
In my opinion, the way Christopher Landon created a funny ghost movie instead of a horror ghost movie is astounding. The characters have great development and have frequent comedic dialogue. Compared to other ghost movies, it has a happy ending and unusual perspective of the ghost. The movie is a little lengthy considering the plot, but Jennifer Coolige having a cameo definitely gives the movie some points.
I’d say this movie is very family friendly. So children who are easily scared will have no problem watching this movie. Though during the medium interview there are some scary moments. This movie isn’t a traditional ghost movie but it also was not made to be horror. This movie is the perfect amount of comedy and adventure, if you’re looking for something entertaining and funny.
