2023 Grammy Wins
The 2023 Grammy Awards was a very big win for history. So many artists pushed past records and won awards that furthered their success in the music industry. Beyonce, Kim Petras, Viola Davis, Tylor Swift, Germaine Franco, Dr. Dre, Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde are among those who won an award. That’s only a small number of this year’s winners. Some other huge winners were Harry Styles, Lizzo, Shervin Hajipour and Samara Joy.
Starting off with the biggest Grammy winner in history; Beyonce. This year she walked away from the event holding four awards. “Beyoncé is now the artist with the most Grammys ever.” According to Hayley FitzPatrick, Carson Blackwelder, and Angeline Jane Bernabe and their article, “2023 Grammys recap: Biggest wins, all the star-studded performances and more”. She received the four awards for her album “Renaissance.” The categories she won include Best Dance/Electronic Recording; Best Traditional R&B Performance; Best R&B Song; and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album. Beyonce now has a total of 32 Grammys.
Moving on to one of the biggest wins for the LGBTQIA+ community. Kim Petras; a German singer-songwriter who won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Unholy” with Sam Smith. She is now the first transgender woman to ever win in that category.
There’s a term called EGOT that artists achieve when they’ve won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Viola Davis achieved this and is now the third black woman to ever receive that status, as well as being the18th person overall. To earn this status, she received her first ever Grammy in the category of the Best Audio book, Narration and Storytelling Recording, for her memoir, “Finding Me”.
Taylor Swift won Best Music Video for “All Too Well: The Short Film.” This makes her the first artist to win that category while having a sole directing credit for her own music video.
Germaine Franco won Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for the Disney animation “Encanto.” She is the first woman of color to ever win that award.
Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde both won their first Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for their duet “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” that topped charts according to Morgan Smith, in her article “From Beyoncé to Taylor Swift: 7 women who made history at the 2023 Grammys”. This made them the first women duo to win the award.
Another big win was for Best Song for Social Change, presented by Jill Biden and awarded to Shervin Hajipour.
One last award that made history was the “Dr. Dre Global Impact Award”. Given to Dr. Dre himself as the first recipient in history.
Here are some of the other big winners from the night. “Harry’s House” by Harry Styles received Album of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. Lizzo won Record of The Year for “About Damn Time.” Samara Joy won Best New Artist and Best New Jazz Vocal Album for her second album “Linger Awhile.”
To celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, older artists including Ice-T, Busta Rhymes, Public Enemy, Nelly, Queen Latifah, RUN-D.M.C., Missy Elliott and younger artists Lil Baby, Lil Uzi Vert and GloRilla, all came together to put on a performance. As a special to close out the night, DJ Khaled and his collaborators Fridayy, Jay-Z, John Legend, Lil Wayne and Rick
Ross came together as well, to perform Khaled’s single “GOD DID”. According to an article by Glenn Rowley called “DJ Khaled Brings “God Did” To Life Alongside Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, John Legend, & Fridayy | 2023 GRAMMYs”, at the end he said, “This for hip-hop.”
Mia Ferruggia, a student at Central Kitsap High School said , “Ariana Grande should have gotten the award or album of the year,” when asked who she wanted to win.
Mason Lang answered, “…the musical theater section of it Into The Woods”. Vocalists Sara Bareilles, Brian d’Arcy James, Patina Miller, and Phillipa Soo received the award for Best Musical Theater Album along with producers Rob Berman and Sean Patrick Flahaven.
Another student, Lilian Johnson was interviewed as well and when asked her favorite performance, she said “Lizzo was really great, I love Lizzo.”
