Cougars 4 Compassion is a new club at Central Kitsap High School centered around animal rights and activism. Their mission is to promote animal welfare and awareness of animal rights issues through community service and education.

“Our club’s goals are to promote awareness of animal rights issues at our school, as well as to make a direct impact through community service, volunteering, and public education, and to make the vegan movement more accessible to the general public,” said club president, Reece Huey.

The club has several projects planned for this year, including an “Instagram post series to address common questions, concerns, misconceptions and stereotypes about being vegan,” said Huey.

The club also plans to work alongside other school clubs centered around community service to work on projects such as trail cleanup and volunteering at the school garden. According to Huey, “Animal rights and environmentalism go hand in hand.”

Members of the club can expect to learn about animal rights, climate justice, and the environmental impact of animal agriculture, as well as what they can do to help.

Cougars 4 Compassion meets every Tuesday at 3:00 in Jeniffer Rumpke’s room, room 2203. There is a $10 membership fee to join the club which covers event fees, volunteer fees, conference fees, and making donations to charitable organizations. Members are also expected to complete at least four hours of community service per month.

The club’s Google Classroom code is jlruitx, and they can be found on Instagram at @cougars4compassion.
