ASL Club 2022-2023

A brief look into CKHS’ American Sign Language club.

As the last bell rings and students begin to empty out into the halls, many classrooms are just beginning to fill with students; Central Kitsap High School is lucky to have so many fun and inclusive clubs!

CKHS clubs are a great way for students to come together and connect with people they may not normally have through a shared interest.

American Sign Language club, run by Adviser Andrea Romano, CKHS’ ASL teacher and a student leadership team (President Abi Kesti, Vice President Jai Salas, Secretary Alejandra Torrez, and Media Person Katelyn Topness), is a no experience needed club, and all students are welcome to attend.

ASL club was originally formed in the heat of the COVID pandemic where students from CKHS as well as Olympic High School met virtually once a week over zoom as a way to bring students together over their love of ASL during such a time of separation.

Now, the club meets every Monday from 2:45-3:15pm in room 3218.

“ASL club really changes with the leadership team,” said Romano. “Whatever the members and the leadership team team wants to do with ASL, we have an ability to do. What seems to be a pattern the last few years is we have games one week and learning the next.”

ASL club is a unique opportunity for students to learn a new language, as well as a new life skill that may benefit them in the future when they least expect it, in a fun and engaging way.

“It seems like this year students are just really wanting to have fun and bond over their love of ASL,” said Romano.

If you’re interested in meeting new people, or want to learn something new, consider swinging by ASL club.
