Tarence Mosley talks about life and basketball
A perspective on Tarence mosley work and personal life.
Long before he coached CKHS, Olympic High School, Silverdale Pee Wee and several AAU basketball teams, Tarence ¨Coach T¨ Mosley, was a student and lover of the game.
Growing up as the oldest of three children, the shy, very active and accident prone Mr. Mosley grew up in Ardmore, Oklahoma and Kansas City, Missouri where he began his relationship with basketball during his elementary school years. After finding his way in the sport throughout his younger years, he progressed to play high school and college basketball.
With many great childhood memories, Mr. Mosley said one his best childhood memories was ¨I was in elementary school and I asked my parents for a BMX dirt bike but my parents ended up getting a huffy dirt bike.¨
After completing high school, Coach T went on to attend college to obtain his AA degree in Criminal Justice. Realizing that Criminal Justice was not for him, Coach T ventured into various fields like finance, management, and sales but only to find his way back to his true passion, basketball in the early 2000ś. “
“I would’ve had to work in a prison and the way my personality is and was it probably wouldn’t have been a good idea.”
As one of CKHS security guards, Coach T plays an important role in ensuring our school’s safety and order.
Principal Craig Johnson replied, ¨What’s important about school security is it provides an additional monitor and support for students.¨
According to Youth.gov, having high quality school programs and regular participation can lead to improved social and emotional skills, including great interacting skills, natural motivation, better concentration efforts, and greater self-worth. As the head of CK varsity basketball Mr. Mosely’s role contributes to students’ natural motivation, better focus efforts, mentorship and CKHS overall morale. But his role as a security officer contributes to the safety and order of our school, which is just as important.
Coach Moseley believes that his dual roles as campus security and head basketball coach adds value to CKHS and compliments one another.
“If the kids are comfortable with seeing me around campus, they will know my style and how I approach them,” said Mr.Mosley.
Johnson believes that staff must have a willingness and desire to want to work with teenagers; while CKHS Athletic Director Mr. Bill Baxter agrees. “ a coach must be able to relate with kids, have a good set of rules and guidelines for kids to follow and have patience and understanding,”Said Mr.Baxter
Moseley said he believes that “if you talk the talk, you have to walk the walk,” and that belief has impacted on his role as a security guard and coach.
“Mr. Moseley, holds kids to standards and when he says that he is going to do something, he sticks to it,” said Mr. Baxter
The security officer and basketball coach that now motivates and inspires so many students, attributes his coaching style to his most inspiring coach, his father.
“ Just watching my dad handle different kids from different backgrounds and different personalities, I’ve kind of picked up his characteristics in how I handle kids and with coaching,” said Mr. Mosley
Judging from Mr.Mosley many years of participation in basketball it would be easy to assume that basketball is his greatest accomplishment but the truth is Mosley’s 26 year marriage and raising his three sons are his greatest accomplishment. “ I am super proud that my wife and I have been married for 26 years.” said Mosley “having both parents in the household has made my kids really great.“
Although working with students and coaching basketball is rewarding to Mosley, his ten year plan is to hopefully retire, enjoy life with his wife and three sons, and continue to coach basketball if he is able.
