Chris and Wendy Kassler may be both known as teachers at Central Kitsap High School, but they are also a couple who have been teaching there together for over 20 years.

In 2002, Wendy and Chris moved to Silverdale from New Mexico.

“New Mexico was hot, dry, and beautiful, but we wanted green, cool, and wet, a new kind of beautiful,” said Chris.

Wendy added she and her husband heard about Central Kitsap High School at a career fair in New Mexico. She also explained that she had visited Seattle for a mission trip and had a good picture of what the area looked like.

For the first 10 years at Central Kitsap High School, Chris taught German and then switched to the social studies department.

Chris now teaches AP Human Geography and Modern World History. He also is able to advise the Dungeons and Dragons Club at Central Kitsap.

Wendy has nested in the English department for all 20 years of teaching at Central Kitsap High School. She currently teaches AP Literature and Composition, Honors Sophomore English, and regular Sophomore English but in the past, she has taught Journalism, AP Language and Composition, and American Literature.

“I advise the Gender Sexuality Awareness Club and Instrumenting Club where I hear lots of nice music,” says Wendy.

Chris and Wendy have only ever worked together in terms of professional career and believe there are so many positives.

“I can’t imagine it (not working together) changing at this point,” Wendy said

“We get to eat lunch together, don’t have to split gas, and we get to drive to school in the morning and afternoon together,” says Chris. The married couple both agreed that working together makes planning schedules very simple.

“I have never seen the two interacting during one of the classes but I wish I had because they are so cute together,” Isabel Redd, a student who has had both Chris For AP Human Geography and Wendy for AP Literature and Composition, said.

Redd has enjoyed experiencing both teachers and agrees that they are both super fun. “I had a lot of fun in Mr. Kassler’s class.”

An extra emphasis of admiration for Wendy was noted by Isabel. “I just love how sweet she is… and how nice she is to everybody,” Isabel explained.

Although working together for this long may be believed to eventually become boring, Chris and Wendy both shared that working together has created much conversation and been positive for friendships.

“We know the same people and can hang out together,” said Wendy. “We have made friends at school.”

Chris added that working in the same building as his wife has created common ground within conversations and that they are able to compare and contrast their work lives within the same building.

Both Wendy and Chris agree that the opportunity to work under the same roof has made life easier.

“I can’t think of a single drawback,” says Chris.

“It almost seems like we’re too lucky in some ways,” explains Wendy.

Although some couples may not enjoy working in the same building, Wendy and Chris have experienced  many positives and unique chances to be together.
