The transition from middle school to high school can be a really big change for the people who are not ready yet. As freshman students’ stress levels increase, some are finding it more difficult over time to focus during classes while assignments are constantly piling up one by one. Freshmen are becoming overwhelmed with high school due dates on assignments, with some students never completing them.
“I’ve noticed a big change with the workload from middle school to high school,” CKHS freshman Clara Wentlandt said. “I think that in high school there is more work, just the sheer amount of assignments from teachers. And I think this is because your assignments are starting to count more, and you really need to know stuff moving forward in your classes.”
Wentlandt believes that there is a big change in the amount of work from middle school to high school, and that the classes are harder than they were in middle school. Many freshmen are having trouble balancing their social, school, and home life. With too much stress causing some students to fall behind in their classes. Freshmen receiving too much work being a big school stressor.
Elisabetta Trojanowski, a freshman student at CKHS, talked about how classes in high school are harder than the classes in middle school. The transition from middle school to high school was not necessarily rough for her. Though it might have gone off to a rocky start for other students in the same grade as her.
“I’m not struggling,” Elisabetta Trojanowski said. “Don’t get me wrong, the classes are harder. Not to the point I’m failing all my classes. I’m still able to turn stuff in on time.”
Trojanowski is doing really well and having extracurricular activities after school. Balancing school and being outside of school can be really good and it can get students to the places they want to be.
Gia Gingrey* is another student at CKHS that is struggling with the workload of assignments and the due dates. Gingrey believes that high school is a lot more difficult than middle school and the amount of work that she has been given this year has been immense so far.
“I’d say that high school is quicker and fast paced and is more stressful, I feel myself struggling a little bit to keep up,” Gingrey said. “I would say that I definitely struggle with the due dates the most.”
Gingrey ended up getting caught up with most of her missing work but there are still things that she has to achieve to get the other missing assignments done.
Here at CKHS, the overload of work for freshmen is significant, with many students struggling to get their work done on time. Being a freshman in high school can definitely be rough and affect a students’ mental health by a heap load. Being cautious and careful about what they have to do to be successful can really help freshmen students in the long run.
