The Greatest Mystery of the Year
Murder at Cafe Noir, the cliched, comical adaptation of the typical Noir films
March 6, 2018
From the Drama Club at Central Kitsap High, presents Murder at Cafe Noir.
In this production, the general baseline of the setting is a cafe on an island in the Caribbean in the early 1940s whose owner has just been murdered. The detective, played by Mission Reed, has originally come to the cafe in search of a runaway.
Featured in Murder at Cafe Noir are a wide variety of different characters with unique backgrounds, typically the criminalistic type.
When questioned about the play, Martel, who plays a journalist, comments, “I think it is a pretty cool play, the title makes it seem like a murder mystery, which it is, and it makes fun of the cliches typically in Noir movies.”
Regarding rehearsals, both Brianne Hicks and Martel believe that they are a lot of fun. At the start of the rehearsal schedule, it’s a lot of fun learning lines, but as it gets closer to the production deadline the rehearsals tend to get more serious.
“They’re very long but fun because the cast is like a family, after a few days, and with all the laughs we have rehearsal does not seem as long as it actually is,” says Brianne Hicks.
Murder at Cafe Noir is also known to have a major comedic aspect overall, and because of the play’s general time period, many of the songs are influenced by jazz and tango.
One of the interesting parts is that although most of the music was provided by the company along with the scripts, some of them were original compositions provided by Teagan Taafe, who is also in the play.
Tatyana Emery, Music Director for the play, shares, “I hope to see that the audience is intrigued and engaged in the show that we put on.”
