#MeTooK12
A New Hashtag Focusing on Sexual Assault in K-12 School
The national non-profit organization Stop Sexual Assault in Schools (SSAIS) has started a new social media hashtag. Branching off of the #MeToo, this hashtag specifically focuses on sexual assault cases that have happened in schools K-12. This extension is called MeTooK12, and it is used on social media to help provide a platform for students looking to speak out about sexual assault.
In a 2017 report by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), it states that they have been long skeptical of schools low reporting rates regarding sexual harassment and bullying. According to 2013-2014 data from the Civil Rights Data Collection, 79% of all public schools reported zero incidents of sexual harassment.
The purpose of #MeTooK12 is to allow students to feel comfortable with speaking out, and sharing personal experiences regarding the subject.
In an interview with Chellie Labonette, board member of SSAIS, she explains the movement a little more in depth.
¨It’s a lot of people sharing stories, a lot of people sharing resources and help¨ Labonette revealed.
This hashtag has reached across to many victims of sexual assault and is a great resource for connecting to others who have been through similar experiences.
