“I pledge allegiance to the flag…”
What is required in public schools regarding the flag?
The flag resembles respect and honor for those who have fallen in combat. One being placed in all classrooms and buildings in public schools is required. Saluting the flag is sometimes mandatory due to the fact that we are not saluting the flag and the pledge, but in honor of the pledge’s author. The Washington State Legislature states that all public schools are required to have the Pledge of Allegiance said at the beginning of the school day and in the beginning of assemblies.
In CK, every morning, the announcements states “Please rise for the Pledge of Allegiance, if you are in the hallways, please stop.” Students stop in the hallways, but in some classes, they have a choice to stand, or not to stand. It depends on the teacher, whether they make their students stand.
“No matter what country you’re in, No matter whose flag is going by,” says Elaine Schick, Food Nutrition and child psychology teacher, “Its international protocol to stand when a flag is presented.”
It depends on the person, whether if they’re American, part of a religion, or a different race. When students don’t listen and stand when required, little consequence is given, they are just told to stand and have a small conversation with the teacher.
“I believe that our constitution, allows for students and anyone else to decide, whether or not to pledge their Allegiance or salute the flag,” says Schick, “But it’s respect to stand and take your hat off whether it’s our flag or whether you are in London and the British flag is present, you stand, take your hat off.”
Whether if someone is a different nationality, or in a different country other than their birthplace, it is always required to stand for a flag. The government and public schools require everyone to stand for a flag.
