There are many important things that one must consider after graduating high school. Most important, is deciding what career path to take. This endeavor alone can be quite debilitating because there are many options that one can choose from. Luckily for the students of Central Kitsap High School (CKHS), there are options and the Career Center is the best option for one to take when trying to decide. The best resource there is the career coordinator, Tyler Hunt. The center is open from the start of the school day to the end.

Hunt is responsible for assisting students in finding what type of career might best suit them.

“I mostly help them explore career options, and explore means doing a career interests assessment,” said Hunt.

The assessment is supposed to help students find what careers that align the most with their interests. From there, financial and educational opportunities and requirements are present.

For those who are completely lost on what career to pursue, the task of career searching can be quite daunting. There is a way to push past this, “I would recommend something of interest and skilled” he says. But most importantly, “your skills have to align with your interests.”

Currently, there are a number of career options for students.

“Every year we’ve had the shipyard do the junior apprenticeship program,” said Hunt, “We’ve had four kids selected this year, five last year.” These students will then go to work over the summer. Other options include apprenticeships with the trade unions to learn the necessary skills for the trade they wish to pursue.

One of the more important steps in the job hunting process includes the resume building process. Hunt states that, “Get started getting involved in finding jobs now. I find many high school students outside of school really have nothing to put on their resume. So that means getting involved in community service groups, youth organizations, volunteering at the hospital, getting involved in school clubs and athletics, build leadership skills, apply for jobs as soon as you can.”
