New Building, New Beginnings
Diving into the feelings of a new building.
With a new school building comes new beginnings for both students and staff alike. For the students of Central Kitsap High School, the transition into a new building sounded like the perfect way to kick off the 2019-2020 school year. As the beginning of the school year crept closer and closer, students began to realize that with a new environment comes a lot of flexibility and adjustment.
Skanska began construction on Sept. 8, 2017, and continued steadily on until it was ready for Central Kitsap Middle School to make the big transition in April 2019. Square footage was not expected to be a problem, as the size of each school was expected to be around 325,000 Square Feet.
For the high schoolers, this year began with Maze Days, which was held in the new school and was a new experience for everyone. Most involved with ASB and other extracurricular activities had already visited the new school, so they understood what it was like inside.
From a student’s point of view, experiences varied based upon who was asked. Senior class president Cody Hall was the first to be interviewed and when asked how he felt about the new school and whether or not it met his expectations, he stated, “I thought it was going to be advanced compared to the old school, and I thought it was going to be very modern so I would say it met them.”
Hall claimed that for the first two weeks, it was fairly easy to get used to the new school environment saying, “I got used to it pretty fast, it’s relatively uniform. For example, the English classes are on the same floor, making it easier to find those classes.”
With the future of the new school coming into question, Hall has optimistic thoughts about the future class experiences at this school. “I feel like a lot more could happen at this school. I feel like there’s a lot to do on the field and in the gym. I know a lot of great memories are going to be put into this school”
High hopes for the new school are shared all around the building and many look forward to making memories. Kicking off the new school year may have sounded like a scary experience to some, but once students got used to the school’s new layout, feeling of comfort began to settle in. Students are now looking forward to going through this school year a day at a time.
