The Central Kitsap Girls’ Fastpitch team won their second league game on March 19. The game started on CK’s home field. In the first inning, CK was already ahead by 3-0.
Coral Howell and Ari Linder pitched throughout the game, keeping the runners on their toes and the batters off the bases. Through the team’s effort, Lincoln High School only managed to score one run throughout the entirety of the game, and that happened in the third inning.
Courtney Cotter, the head coach for the fastpitch team, has been trying to teach the team to have more discipline at the plate.
“We’re seeing a lot of different pitchers; some throw harder, and some don’t throw as hard,” Cotter said. “So, staying within ourselves and having that growth mindset—just helps with the team.”
Throughout the game, CK took the opportunity to make steals. They cheered on their teammates when they stepped up to the plate, encouraging them to hit a home run or to send a player at 3rd base home. Their words of encouragement were shouted out loudly from the dugout, along with support from the audience.
CK was very engaged in the game, and it showed in the outcome. They sealed the victory 13-1, letting the other team hardly touch home plate. The in-field players were on their feet during the whole game, catching almost every fly ball.
Kylee Peterson played as a first baseman and a catcher during this game against Lincoln High School. She made many outs at first base in the duration of the game. After the game, Peterson gave Ruby Carter a shout out after their big win.
“She was our swing player, and she’s a freshman,” Peterson said. “She swung up from JV, and she ran the bases, and she always has a very good attitude.”
Carter played right field and was nervous about it, but she overcame that and continued to play throughout the game. CK’s performance helped them win their second district game. Cotter believes they’re a very talented team, and she looks forward to playing against Timberline and Gig Harbor in the future.
