CKHS girls’ basketball, currently fifth in the 3A South Sound League, secured a decisive victory against Olympia’s sixth place Capital High School by a dominant score of 58-32 on January 11th. The win, which featured the full team for the first time since the second game of the season, came after a slow-to-score first quarter, with Capital attaining the first two points; however, CK came back to enter the second quarter winning at 14-6.

Following the end of the first quarter, CK maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the game, entering halftime at 32-13. Their final 26 points were achieved in the last two quarters, their action near the basket peaking in the third.

“They played hard, had fun, and it was fun to watch,” said Assistant Coach Lindsay Baumgartner. “They’re playing really well together as a team.”

Leading the team in points scored with an average of 14.3 points per game, senior Ella Baumgartner with senior Sahara Soufi contributed on the attacking front, while seniors Sophie Driskell and Jada Kopp alongside juniors Abi Lundblad and Callie Dudley found success defensively.

According to Coach Baumgartner, the team’s “intensity and energy” were the motivating factors and reasons for CK’s success and victory. The coaches and team are looking to continue to refine their “composure when they need to pull back and slow things down.”

Baumgartner highlighted the return of junior Maddy Higgs who recovered from an early-season injury and that the full team was able to play for the first time together since the second game of the season.

“I think we played really well,” said junior Savannah Fourier. “It was a really good win, and I’m really proud of Abi for being a good guard today.”

In addition to her guard performance, Lundblad scored her first three-pointer in her basketball career during the game. Baumgartner emphasized this achievement: “she’s now 100%, a one for one this season.”

Lundblad displayed surprise for her three pointer.

“I didn’t even know where the line was, to be honest with you,” she said. But to her, the experience was “in one word, swish.”
