Cross Country: One hill of a sport
“Champions are forged in practice,” Albro said.
Jumping over hay bales and training everyday to do their best, the 2015-2016 cross country team has improved as the season has worn on. Sophomore Molly Fischer, known for her speed, said, “Each meet is a learning experience, but scores really only count for post season. However, our successes this far are making us excited to compete.”
Fischer continued, explaining the cross country scoring system, “1st place is one point, 2nd place is two points, etc. and we score the first five runners from each team. The team with the lowest score wins. Even though you have the best four runners in the world, you are only as strong as your 5th runner. Our 5th runners are very critical to the success of our team. 6th runners have the opportunity to bump other teams down points when they pass them, and this could be the difference between a win and loss.”

“The team is getting faster and stronger every day,” Fischer said.
They traveled to Portland earlier this year for an overnight meet. Fischer said, “Portland cross country went well and a lot of people ran personal bests. The weather was ideal for the fast course. Plus, the overnight trip with the team was a blast!” She continued, “We were able to race against many new and competitive teams, as it is the biggest meet we go to before post season.”
Sophomore Molly Giesbrecht said, “Getting to know your teammates better, getting a high-scale meet experience, that’s what made Portland special.”
Senior Ethan Albro explained, “I love the family feel of cross country. Everybody comes together in one big team and we bond at team events like meets and pasta feeds.”

“The cross country team has exceeded expectations this year in terms of intensity in workouts and races and improving times,” Albro explained.
He continued, “I am in cross country because I never have to fear losing. I can run against my past self and improve my times rather than worry about a final score. Cross country is all inclusive. You don’t need to be a specific speed. The coaches promise to take any skill level and improve it to the max potential.” Due to the coaches guidance and the team’s hard work the CKHS cross country team won the League Championship.
