December Fourth Forum

Executive ASB Vice president Ella Herrman speaks in front of the group gathered for the forum on December fourth.

It is always important for students and teachers to discuss important events, and this is exactly what happened at the forum on December fourth. Opening the discussion of the CKHS dress code, senior Chellie Labonete mentioned that the dress code does not necessarily need to be changed but “enforced better” and gave examples of times when students had been treated unfairly in front of their peers. Following that, senior Ella Herman brought up the fact that dress code may be a bit harder to follow as we approach the summer months.

When the idea of open campus lunch was brought up, it was immediately put down due to safety concerns, and the limited amount of time that is available for lunch. However, the possibility of food trucks coming to the school on certain days of the week was also discussed and was not immediately disapproved. The administration vetoed the idea of open campus lunch due to their expectations of attendance issues, but they may be open to the possibility of food trucks.

Later during the meeting, students also brought up the possibility of adding microwaves to the cafeteria for students to warm up their own food. However, some were concerned that the students were not as mature as they should be and that the cleanliness of the microwaves would not be maintained. The teachers did seem positive about the idea of adding microwaves and will look into it as a possibility.

Students and teachers were also concerned about the styrofoam plates that we use for lunches now. Senior Benji Rinehart explained that there is a group that is trying to create an alternative to the styrofoam plates used at lunch. Reinhart’s claim that  “it’s bad to eat on those as they are sometimes mixed into the food and they release harsh chemicals into our foods” and said that “it would be much cheaper in the long run for plastic or metal trays to replace our now styrofoam plates.” In the end, there were too many flaws to their alternative options that the probability of changing the dishes we use is very low.

Senior Maxanova Pantano discussed that teachers shouldn’t assume that someone prefers he or she pronouns and he believes that students shouldn’t have to send out a letter to all their teachers in the beginning of the year explaining that they are transgender and need to be called by a certain pronoun. Finally he suggested that teachers ask in the beginning of the year as teachers do with nicknames.

Lastly, students brought up the controversy over the possibility of decorating the graduation caps of seniors. Traditionally, the caps are not decorated to keep the event more formal. Many are skeptical of allowing seniors to decorate their own caps because they fear that people may put “inappropriate” things on their caps. Another concern is what rules would regulate designs while still making the decorations fair for everyone. Madison Largey offered that Skills USA could make a separate graduation cap available to decorate and purchase for after the ceremony for pictures which is a possibility that may be now considered.
