It is a privilege to be able to see the White House, it is an honor to be chosen by the state to go to the White House and claim an award. This is the privilege that could be obtained by two seniors, Madison Largey and Joy Clark. Largey was selected as a Washington Scholar in Career and Technical Education while Clark was selected as a recipient of the Washington CTE Student Success Award.

CTE stands for career and technical education and the award was the Executive Order 11155 signed in 2015 by Barack Obama, awarding additional scholars, besides the presidential scholar, who demonstrates “ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.” This year is the first ever awarding of the CTE award to students.

Both of the nominees worked hard to achieve the honor of the CTE award. Madison Largey said she joined SkillsUSA and Robotics club to get “hands-on experience.” She also took many CTE and AP classes and with her knowledge helped design the first ASL CTE SkillsUSA contest.

Joy Clark also took a similar path to Largey, participating in SkillsUSA and Robotics Club. Clark was interested in CTE as she first took Computer-Aided Design and Drafting. Both of these nominees worked hard to be in the position they are in now. Joy Clark said, “I could not have gotten to where I am today without sheer determination, and support from friends, family, and the wonderful community of teachers and students here at CKHS.”
