Materials Science Students Create Cougar Rings
Students around CKHS have always strived to show their Cougar pride. Seniors Hosea Valenzuela and Zachary Robinson have taken school spirit to a new level by making rings in the shape of cougar heads. Inspired by their materials science and technology teacher Jim Washington, the two seniors have been using the techniques they learned to craft the rings.
Washington was showing the class different molds and Robinson said he “saw the cougar one he had made awhile ago and asked ‘can we make those?’” The next day the process began.
“We used three different kinds of metals: Jeweler’s Bronze, Ancient Bronze, and Sterling Silver,” stated Robinson. After making the mold of the rings, a week long endeavor, the students spent about three days polishing the rings until they took the shape of a cougar head.
Senior Seth Leggett bought one of the rings available. “It’s better than our class rings, because it’s cheaper and has more meaning!” said Leggett.
