Academic Scholar Athlete, Katie Thorsen
During the fall sports season, Senior Katie Thorsen received the Girls’ Scholar Athlete of the Narrows League. The award is only handed out to one boy and one girl in the entire 3A league. Principal Stephen Coons personally delivered the award to Thorsen during her third period and mentioned how she had maintained a 3.98 GPA during her fall season while taking five advanced placement classes. On some of her AP tests she was announced as an AP Scholar because of her high scores. Thorsen has been named the Girls’ Scholar Athlete every sports season she has played, which includes volleyball, basketball, and track and field.
Thorsen said, “The award was not a goal of mine, and since I’ve already turned in my college application, it was not so it looked good on my transcript. It was because I think that both academics and sports are important, so I work hard to find a balance, so I am able to be successful in both. It is a nice feeling receiving the award, because it reminds me that I’ve been working hard, and hard work really does pay off.”
Thorsen’s advice for finding that balance in order to be a good athlete and a successful student is to have a strong work ethic and to have good time management. “I know it’s easier said than done, but in the long run, it is definitely worth it!”
Thorsen has lettered in three different sports each year of high school, and is pushing hard during her winter sport, basketball, to maintain her GPA and do well in basketball.
