Forum 02.26

Executive ASB President Abraham Shim and Vice President Ella Herrmann got prepared before the forum began.

After the success of Forum 12.04, the Executive ASB thought another forum would be beneficial to the students and teachers to recap the last forum and discuss further issues. Forum 02.26 began with a recap of the last forum. Principal Stephen Coons discussed the improbability of putting microwaves into the cafeteria, because it would pop the breaker. However, he said that he would try his hardest to incorporate lunchroom microwaves into the new CKHS. Vice President Ella Herrmann explained that the upcoming informal dance that’s happening is because of the idea proposed at forum 12.04. The dance will occur on March 26th.

Herrmann gave a brief recap of what happened at the last forum.

One of the main ideas expressed by senior Maxanova Pantano at the last forum was the use of pronouns. He believes that teachers should be further educated on the use of he/she pronouns. Because of this, the teachers at this school will take part in a meeting over the summer that outlines this issue and how to properly deal with it.

At forum 02.26, more issues and topics were brought up by the administration and students. One of these was implementing an advisory or tutorial period into the school’s schedule. Coons described an advisory as a 30 minute class on Thursdays in between 3rd period and 1st lunch. The purpose would be to get extra homework done, have link leaders visit their freshmen, go to a different teacher’s’ classroom for extra help, and possibly have club meetings during this time. An advisory differs from a tutorial period in that a tutorial would be strictly academic. There would not be club meetings during tutorials — it would be a class to get homework and studying done, and if needed, to visit a specific teacher. Assistant Principal Craig Johnson created an online poll that the students at the forum could text in their answers. 57% of students voted for an advisory period, 21% for implementing a tutorial period, and 21% thought we should keep the schedule as it is.

AustinMullins
Mullins passionately described why a later school start time would not be a good idea.

Next on the agenda was a later school start time. Junior Kellen Lavelle said that studies have shown that students learn more if school starts a few hours later. Senior Austin Mullins explained that a lot of juniors and seniors work in the evening, and having a later start time would give the students less time to be working.  Coons explained to the students that if high schools changed their start time, this would affect every single elementary, middle, and high school in the district, because all require bus services, making the idea improbable, but not impossible. Instead he proposed a seven period day where the seventh period could be optional to juniors and seniors, making a job possible.

The last thing on the agenda was Coons asking students what they want to see in the new CK that will be built with the recently passed bond money. Responses included: the cool drinking fountains that they have at the YMCA, water conserving toilets, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and more artwork around the school.

The next forum will come soon Cougs, so be ready to voice your opinion and change this school.
