Leap into the work force
PSNS internship is a work study program targeted to juniors who are committed to getting a job at the shipyard. Career Center Secretary Lisa Stephens has been helping students fill out their USAJOBS application for this opportunity for the past two years. She said “this is an excellent opportunity for any student to get an interesting, real world experience in an industrial organization while contributing to the defense of our nation. The application process is VERY TEDIUS and extremely detail orientated and can easily take 36 hours to complete!” Stephens also said, “I am more than happy to help anyone fill out their application, just stop by the career center if you have any questions.”
Some of the jobs at the shipyard are tool and parts attendant, rigger, marine pipe fitter, ship fitter and welder. The shipyard is an industrial environment and a drug free work environment. It is highly competitive and there is an interviewing process.
Students must be on track to graduate, be a minimum of 16 years old and have a 2.0 or better. If selected, interns will work full time during the summer (of their junior/senior year) at the shipyard. The work hours are 40 hours a week Monday through Friday. The first rotation starts June ( junior year) – September ( senior year) and the second rotation starts February (of your senior year) – June. Students will be receiving high school credit while working at the shipyard during senior year. In June they will be able to walk with their class for high school graduation.
Once they complete the internship they are highly likely to get employed at the shipyard, and earn 4 hours of annual leave and 4 hours sick leave per pay period (every two weeks) during this program as well as earning $10.75/hour.
If interested in this program, This opportunity opens once a year, typically in March.
