Just Passing

CKHS finally gets its new building according to the close bond measure passed this last February with just a 60.1 percent. Construction will begin in the next year or so and is expected to finish in the fall of 2019. The bond barely passed but that won’t slow down its construction or the fact the new school will be built. Integrus Architecture will be the architect firm working on the CK campus project.

Senior Brayden Howard said,“I’m excited that we get a new school even if I won’t be around to see it. Although I haven’t heard if there will be a pool or not, if so Im’ma fail until I can get there.”

The school levy passed with a more substantial margin of 63.8%. Levy funds will be pushed towards new books, computers ,etcetera and will help to facilitate student learning. The current schools will continue to be used until the new school has completed construction.

The new building will be a shared school between CKMS and CKHS with grades 7-12 on the same campus. There will be an upper floor that will be used for the high school classes and a lower area for the middle school classes according to the current building plans. Each area will have the same commons rooms, including cafeterias, gyms, and athletic fields.

Each passing year has made the current CK a school of disrepair. A new school means new opportunities, including more space for sport and athletes to practice, a building without leaks, cracks, or missing HVAC units. A flaw in the initial design of our school is the number of entrances, which cause the school to be less safe than it should be. With the portables, the number of ways into a classroom full of students is higher than ever. New CK will have the availability for electronic locks to lower the number of entrances to the building, making the new building far safer than the current building.

“We want the new school to be a safe environment for kids to learn and that will last for as long as we need it,” commented Executive Director of Business & Operations Doug Newell.

While the bond and levy measures have passed, another set of questions has popped up about the other facilities around the district. A current alternative high school is shown on the map of the new school as a parking lot. So the question has been asked: where will the alternative school be relocated? One possibility is that they move to the Jenne Wright Building which is used as a district building right now, but a final decision has not been made.
