Day of Silence

Junior Joshua Samuels and sophomores Wealhtheow Stark and Jay Salazar had a victory snack after a successful day.

Day of Silence is celebrated on April 15 of every year. Day of Silence is when the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community doesn’t talk for a whole school day. The GLSEN 2013 National School Climate Survey found that nearly nine out of ten LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and more than 30% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety.

Sophomore Anthony Hill said, “I feel strong about this day because LGBT people are silenced everyday at school.” The Day of Silence helps bring us closer to making anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and name-calling unacceptable in U.S. schools.

Sophomore Alyssa Guidery said, ”It helps people be aware of why we are silent on this day; it reminds them that we are all the same and equal.” English teacher Wendy Kassler said, “This year could have been better, but it was still a success. There were 40 students who participated in the Day of Silence.” But more probably participated that weren’t counted.
