Volleyball Player – Leah Kunz
The girls’ volleyball team at CK is full of strong, agile players who are highly determined to win this season. Junior Leah Kunz is excited for another year of fierce volleyball competition.
Kunz is number nine on the varsity team and can be seen playing in defense and offense positions. However, Kunz prefers “more offense because it’s just more exciting when we get a kill [point] or a smart play.“ In the volleyball games that most students play in high school during gym, students are separated in a specific three by two formation with three offensive players (away from net) and three defensive players (close to the net) and rotate every time they acquire the ball to serve. The Girl’s Volleyball team contradicts this by having more of an open space set up to reach the ball better; “The spaced-out setup is more better, like there’s a system to it,” adds Kunz.
The volleyball team begins pre-season practices and exercises as early as July to try to stay fit during the summer; Kunz said,“Some girls will do league [over the summer], but most girls will come back for open gym for about two hours a week. But it stops in August because the coach isn’t allowed to train us right before the season starts.” She said of her coach, “He’s good, probably one of my better ones.” During the season, the girls practice from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. or 5 p.m. to 7 p.m, depending on their schedule, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays.
Crowd support is a major factor in every sport. In their game against Capital High School on Tuesday, September 27th, the volleyball team received a great amount of crowd support to help cheer them on to win. They made a close comeback during the fourth period with a final score of 22 to 25, that lead to a dramatic fifth period with CK winning 2 periods and CHS also winning 2 periods. However, the game ended with a 3 to 2 period ratio with CHS winning 3 periods and CK winning 2.Our lady Cougars never once stopped fighting for the victory. Kunz said it’s “ fun to have that excitement in the crowds, we don’t get that very often.”
