Tutorial; Should it Stay or Should it Go?

Tutorial is a new academic program introduced to CKHS this year. Some of the teachers and students have been enjoying it. For example activities adviser Katie Staker said, “It’s a good thing if the students feel like it’s a benefit…I feel like we should re-evaluate, but keep it throughout the whole year and see if it has helped students.” Junior Dazion Cook said, “It’s chill  and you get to catch up on work.”

The concept of tutorial is for students to get that extra help to relieve some stress, and to also finish work or study for certain subjects. Junior Haylee Jensen said, “No, I don’t think it relieves stress because it doesn’t correspond with my classes…and I don’t feel like it is necessary, because most of my important classes are in the beginning of the day, but it does have its benefits.”

Tutorial was created by administration to give the students that extra help they need to become more successful in the near future and find a solution to close the achievement gap, such as students who are struggling with a topic they can use tutorial to improve their grade in that class. Not only does it benefit the students to become more successful, it also helps the teachers. “I get to know some juniors. If I can help students, then that’s helping me do my job,” said Staker.

History teacher Katherine Devnich commented on what their goals are to make it better: “We will find a way to seek help from individual teachers coming up with a past system, and change the culture.” Devnich also believes that tutorial will be a success. “I think it’s a time in the day where the students can get help and can strengthen student-teacher relationships.”
