As summer time approaches, most students start preparing for vacation, ready to escape the constraining halls of school. Others are getting ready to jump right back into it. Summer school is right around the corner, and it is time to decide whether to register or not.

People take summer school for two different reasons. The first, and most common, reason is credit recovery. When students fail one or more semesters of a class they need to fix it, especially for courses required to graduate.

Clarity Flouse, a senior who needs to take an English course in order to graduate, doesn’t mind that he has to take it.

“In reality it doesn’t matter how long it takes a student to graduate,” he said. There’s no shame in taking extra time to learn. It doesn’t impact how much of a success someone is later in life.

The other reason people take summer courses is to earn extra credits outside the school year. Students who take full year courses take summer school for the basic things like Health, PE, and Civics. College Board has a list of various national programs students can register for, as well as an outline of what to expect.

Libby Zimsen, a junior, will take an online PE class in order to get the credits they need to graduate. They’ve never taken a summer class before, but they are prepared for it.

“I can do what I want,” Zimsen says, enjoying the independence the class will offer.

The district itself offers both in class summer school and online courses. To register costs one hundred dollars, though scholarships are open for students with special circumstances. These classes run from July 9th to August 2nd. It offers one semester credit of each required math and and generic English courses.

The district’s offered summer courses can be found on the official district website

West Sound Tech offers summer courses in a physical classroom setting. While students can register for any districts version, there is one specifically meant for the CK district. The CK WST branch is held at Fairview Middle School from July 16th to August 3rd, 8am to 2:30pm. There are six courses available, including Health, which is a required class.

Remember, there’s no shame in going to summer school, no matter what a person’s reasons are for registering. Learning is not on a set schedule, no matter what people say.
