Billie Eilish is a seventeen year old singer who became active in the world of music in 2015. She became famous after successful debut single ¨Ocean eyes¨. Since then Billie and her brother, who also helps her write all of her songs, have released multiple singles that have become top hits.

One of those singles is titled “bury a friend.” This particular song has been reviewed by many people because of the deep meaning behind her lyrics. In the chorus of the song Billie repeats a series of cryptic questions, ¨What do you want from me? Why don’t you run from me?

What are you wondering? What do you know? Why aren’t you scared of me? Why do you care for me? When we all fall asleep, where do we go?¨ When interviewers and fans asked her about the meaning behind those questions, and furthermore the whole song, she stated that she was speaking to the fictional yet real ¨monster under the bed.¨ She then went on to claim is also sometimes her dark side.

When she sings ¨why do you care for me?¨ and ¨why don’t you run from me?¨ Billie is asking herself why she is not scared of this side of her and why she embraces it instead.Which I think is an incredibly relatable statement, for me because in some situations I am my own worst enemy. Comparing it to a monster under the bed, to me, is a great metaphor and paints a perfect image of how Billie is feeling towards herself.

Billie also asks the monster, ¨when we all fall asleep, where do we go?¨ Others who have written reviews on this song have stated that she seems to be wondering where we go when we die. To me this shows her curiosity towards death and the after life which brings a dark side to the song.

When I first heard this song I noticed the dark rhythm and the tone in Billies voice was sort of haunting and I didn’t know what to think of it. However the more I listened to it the more catchy it got and the more I understood and related to the lyrics. I have listened to every song on Billies album (which includes a collaboration with my favorite artist Khalid) many times now, and I can say that I am really a fan of her work and how expressive she is with her words. If you have not yet listened to this song or any of her other songs I would definitely give them a try.
