On April 25, PlayStation Productions released the horror movie “Until Dawn” based on the game, featuring the actors, Ella Rubin as Clover Paul and Peter Stormare as Dr. Alan Hill.
This movie is a bit different from the actual game itself, as the objective of the game is to survive against a creature called the Wendigo. A Wendigo is a cannibalistic monster associated with starvation, winter, and greed. Another thing is the character that is played has to survive all night until dawn. The time and setting of the “Until Dawn” movie comes before the game itself, but they still both have the same events and structure as each other considering the movie is based on the game.
I have really strong opinions about horror movies whether they were good or bad, this has to be one of the best films that I have seen. It had so many excellent jumpscares that made me and most of the other people in the theater jump out of their seats with terror.
In the “Until Dawn” game, it starts off with a small group of friends who humiliate their friend, Hannah Washington, because she had a crush on one of the guys in their group. So, their friends wanted to set her up with him.
Washington decided to run into the winter forest all alone out of embarrassment and shock while her twin sister, Beth Washington, runs after her to see where she went. The sisters end up finding each other and thought they were safe, but they were not, as they were soon chased off the edge of a cliff by one of the Wendigos.
About one year later, the brother and the friend group of the twins go back to the cabin in the forest for the anniversary of their deaths. While the group was at the cabin, they had a small encounter with one of the Wendigos, which turned into a face-to-face encounter, making them realize that they must survive until dawn.
The characters find clues to navigate the “Until Dawn” game and find totems which tell different dates along the way. Each decision the player makes will affect the outcome of the game itself. The clues are objects the player collects to find new information to unlock dialogue and potentially help save the characters that are being played. It also helps the player understand the storyline of the game.
The movie follows this same topic and runs really well with the plot. There were so many plot twists that it made it more captivating to watch. The jumpscares play a really big part in the movie, it had my heart pounding as I saw one of the Wendigos on the big screen.
At the beginning of the movie, it was a little confusing to understand what was happening. However, towards the end of the movie, it became much easier to understand. Such as getting to know the characters a little bit better and getting introduced to the different types of monsters that were causing problems for the friend group.
Towards the end of the movie, there was a scene where the main character had been escaping the Wendigo and stumbled into Dr. Hill’s office. The office was the same one as in the game, and I thought that was a really cool touch that they added into the film.
There were also a lot of different settings in the movie. The settings within the movie were closely modeled after the game, especially with all the little details. There was the visitors center and the gas station towards the beginning of the movie, and towards the end there was the forest, Dr. Hill’s office, and the mines. I felt like this was an excellent touch that PlayStation Productions added.
It wasn’t just the Wendigos that were sent out to kill the group of friends, there were also different types of unkillable creatures. Like a witch that went out to kill everyone.
Overall, this movie was an absolute joy to sit down with a bucket of popcorn and watch. It is an amazing film, and I cannot wait to see if there is a second one coming out into theaters. I would definitely recommend “Until Dawn” to all the people who have a hobby for watching horror movies.
