“Cocaine Bear” is a movie that was inspired by the real life story of a 175 pound american black bear who consumed a full duffel bag of cocaine in December 1985. The bag had fallen out of a plane which was being piloted by Andrew C. Thornton II, Thornton was convicted of being a drug smuggler. The Cocaine was dropped in the forest when Thornton jumped off the plane with a duffel bag full of cocaine he had intended to sell but he grabbed a faulty parachute and fell into a forest in Georgia.

The bear was found three months later dead beside 40 opened plastic containers of cocaine compared to the real life events. The movie is an over exaggeration, it was never intended to be identical to the real events but more of a parody and a little bit of satire.

The story of the movie follows two middle school students Henry and Dee Dee skipping a day of school to paint pictures of the waterfalls in the forest. While on the trail to the waterfall they stumble across a plastic brick of cocaine. After Henry tries to prove that he’s done cocaine by eating a knife full of cocaine the bear smells it out and attacks them.

Much of the joy that comes from the movie is from the bear, which looks surprisingly high definition for a movie that was cheesy. Through the movie I found myself looking more forward to the bear being in the scenes and rooting for the bear as she consumes more of the cocaine slowly by opening more and more bricks. The movie has many comedic parts and several parts where it feels less interesting than other moments and the story is a bit confusing but overall it’s an enjoyable movie and a good way to kill time.
