For those more math-inclined students, CK offers a yearly math competition. This year’s competition was held on February 15th in the library after school. Past participants senior Warren Coons and junior Judah Wyllie discussed their memories of the event.

“This isn’t a high stakes test. We kind of expected it to be rough, so we just held our heads up high and hoped for the best,” said Coons, who competed in his 9th- and 10th-grade years and made first place in both.

At the event, students are given a 25-question multiple-choice test and one hour to complete it. Students are scored based on questions answered and correctness, with six points awarded per correct answer and no points for an incorrect answer, though students who did not know the answer could leave it blank for one and a half points. Students who received a minimum of one hundred points were eligible to move on to the state-level competition.

“I don’t think anyone from our school made it. It’s a very high bar to reach,” said Wyllie, commenting on the difficulty of the test.

“I think the best [competitor received] 78 points, [and] I think I got 68 points,” agreed Coons.

Students who feel ready for a challenge should brush up on their math skills in preparation for the event next year.
