Old Classroom, New Teacher

Art teacher Dawn Adams gives senior Anikka Taeza some tips for her drawing.

When Judy  Sorrels announced she was retiring from her art teacher position at CKHS, the search was on to find a replacement. Many applied but only one got the job, Dawn Adams. After graduating from Montana State University, she had taught art many times before, for students in kindergarten through college, in Washington, Montana, California, Washington D.C, and even Cuba.

When she learned that she had the job, she was at her old school, on graduation day.

“As I was graduating one class, I got the job to teach another class, so I was really excited to move here and have a job,” said Adams.

Most of the students didn’t learn there would be a new art teacher until the end of last year, and some not until they got to class this year. “I was a little worried when I found out,”  said junior Hannah Ordonez, an AP studio art student, “but when I met her she seemed really nice and really cool.”

So far, Adams enjoys teaching at CK, because of all the different classes she gets to teach and hopes she gets the chance to teach everything she wants to before the end of the year.

“Mrs. Adams makes the class fun and uppity,” said senior Anikka Taeza, president of the art club.

Adams hopes that she will get to experience the new school building along with all her students and is excited to make the move into her new room when the time comes.

“My biggest goal for the year is to let every student know that they matter,” said Adams.
