Presidents Day

Presidents Day

President’s Day is a day to celebrate past presidents, and also future presidents. Civics teacher Laura Jackson says, “take time to reflect on previous presidents, and of course Washington and Lincoln. George Washington being the father of our country and Lincoln was responsible for the Emancipation Proclamation. These two presidents, having contributed so much to our country deserve a day of honor.”

This day was first used to celebrate George Washington’s birthday in 1800.The event that lead citizens to celebrate this holiday had to do with the start of the Washington Monument that was built in 1848. This is usually celebrated on the 22nd of February. After Washington’s death in 1799, his birth became a standing point for his remembrance. On this day, citizens of the U.S.  remember Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Some use this day off to enjoy time off of school. “I enjoy spending the day sleeping, but it also is nice celebrating new and past presidents,” said senior Anastasia Reardon. On the 20th of February, CK will be taking this day off to enjoy President’s Day.  If this holiday were in July, it would be a lot like a certain Independence Day that happens on the 4th of July. This year the United States swore in a brand new president, Donald J Trump as the nation’s 45th president.
