Central Kitsap High School’s girls’ junior varsity basketball team defeated Yelm High School on January 30th with a 28-18 win.

CK quickly took the lead at the start of the first quarter and powered their way through, ending with a 6-2 score. The girls held a winning score all throughout the second half, securing the already-guaranteed win with a 10 point lead.

Despite the slight bumps in their current season, CK came out on top this game. Frank Moppins, the girls junior varsity coach, felt positive about taking home the victory.

“I feel good going into our last game,” said Moppins. “…there are things we can improve on, but just to get the last win of the season really feels great.”

Although Moppins has been a coach for over 20 years, this is his first year coaching at Central Kitsap.

“I love the game for one but teaching the game and seeing them from when they first started to our last day and seeing the growth of the girls, it keeps me coming back year after year after year,” said Moppins.

After their winning game, sophomore Izzy Griffin (#21) and sophomore Addie Hasty (#10) both felt proud.

“I thought that the game itself was good and it was a good game to end on,” said Griffin. “However, personally, I think that I played okay. I think there’s room for improvement still, and I’m really proud of how everyone played.”

“It was a great game,” said Hasty. “We definitely could have done better but we came out with the dub, so that’s all that matters.”

As the winter season slowly starts to melt away, the CKHS girls’ basketball team will prepare to play their last few games. The girls junior varsity team took home the win in their second to last game and will wrap up their season Thursday, February 1st during the CKHS girls basketball senior night.

“Take enjoyment,” said Moppins. “Enjoy the game because this is a privilege, not a right.”
