The gym buzzed with energy Dec. 9 as players warmed up under the bright lights. The student section filed in, with the audience stomping on the bleachers moments before the tipoff. As the crowd settled, varsity Head Coach Larry Williams remained calm and focused, stressing the importance of discipline and execution in the moments leading up to tipoff.
“The main focus tonight…get a win,” Williams said. “You want to get a win and do it the right way. Get a win, do it the right way. Play Cougar basketball. Have fun, be disciplined, and play great defense.”
Williams highlighted guard Josiah Espinoza (#5) as the player to watch heading into the matchup, an expectation he carried into the game with impact. Espinoza finished with eight points, scoring three in the second quarter, three more in the third, and adding two in the fourth. His steady scoring helped fuel Central Kitsap, giving the Cougars a reliable offensive presence as the game tightened.

“He’s been averaging the most points for us,” Williams said. “So I’m thinking he might continue that tonight.”
But Timberline posed a challenge CK had prepared for all week. Williams identified Timberline players #1, #4, and #13 as key threats.
“Number 1 is their X-Factor,” Williams said. “He’s not the star, but he does all the small things; rebound, put-backs, defense. Just has those intangibles that make a difference in the game.”
To counter that, Williams adjusted CK’s lineup, inserting freshman DJ Richardson for added length and defensive flexibility.
“He gives us more size and versatility on the defensive end,” Williams said.
Once the game began, CK leaned heavily on its defensive schemes and rebounding efforts. According to the stats sheet, the Cougars forced multiple turnovers in each half and found scoring rhythm through ball movement and transitions. Espinoza continued to emerge as a primary offensive contributor, while Richardson’s presence helped contest shots inside.
“I changed it up, a little faster,” Williams said. “We added the freshmen, DJ Richardson, to the line-up tonight. He gives us more size and versatility on the defensive end.”
Despite momentum swings throughout the night, CK stayed committed to the disciplined play Williams emphasized. The match-up unfolded as a continuous, back-and-forth struggle for control of the ball, with both teams trading runs and relying on their key playmakers.
“Play great defense and do it the right way,” Williams said. “Regardless of the scoreboard, the focus remained on progress. That’s always the goal.”
