May 24, 2023, Central Kitsap High School students and community members gathered to celebrate the debut of the second edition of Figments Magazine, and the hard work of the Literature and Arts Club throughout the 2022-2023 school year.

Previously only available for preorder, Figments Festival was the first opportunity individuals had to take a look at the physical copy of the magazine as well as listen to live readings of some of the poems and short stories available.

Nevada Story performed his own short story “Counting Raindrops,” leaving the crowd entranced as they detailed a heartbreaking sapphic story.

“I thought it was going to be a happy, nice, sapphic love story, but.. it wasn’t,” said Rocel Jaravata. “It was nice hearing it happy at first, but it ended up tragic, as usual. That made me sad, but it was still a really good story.

While contributing their own work, Story also functions as the design and layout editor for Figments Magazine. The Literature and Arts Club spends the majority of the year collecting submissions, revising, and planning the layout of the magazine.

“We [are] celebrating the release of the magazine and all the art that’s been put into it and just the arts in general,” said Story. “Everything from photography and visual art to music and pieces of literature.”

In addition to live readings of the literature available in the magazine, performances took place during the festival in the auditorium, as a slideshow of artwork available flicked by behind them.

After performances, a gallery walk and silent auction filled the CKHS commons. Excited Figments staff members sported “Fig-Fest Staff” name tags, working to make sure the show ran smoothly, and individuals attending had everything they needed.

The Literature and Arts Club meets in room 2218, supervised by Kathrine Miller, after school on a to-be-determined day for the following school year. Figments Magazine is on Instagram @ckhsfigments.
