Students of CKHS rush to the gym door, pushing through to take their seats at this year’s Homecoming Assembly. People from all grade levels have different views on how this year went, including Sharlet Greenlaw, who attended this year as a member of CK’s Varsity cheer team.
“It’s a lot more work than I thought it was going to be,” Greenlaw said. “But it’s fun, and I enjoy the hard work.”
Greenlaw was part of cheer in middle school and did ballet for years before that. In her previous years doing cheer, she performed at many pep assemblies. At the assemblies, it is the cheer teams’ job to give the room a sense of spirit. They do this by singing and dancing to songs and performing their cheers.
She spoke about the dedication it takes to transition from middle school to high school cheer, and the passion she has for the sport. She stated that she really enjoys having friends in all of the grade levels as a freshman and stated that the whole team is very supportive.
“I really enjoyed it, it was well done [and] there was a lot of good set up,” Junior Parker Davy said. “[It] seemed like there was a lot of effort put into it, and it seemed really fun —I’d say it was considerably better than last year. There were a lot more fun things about it.”
Davy says that he is excited to see how next year’s homecoming pep assembly will compare. He stated that he enjoyed watching the games this year and seeing the spirit from all the classes. Most students said that they enjoyed it and had a good time, including Jaden Williams, a senior on the varsity football team and Homecoming Court member, who spoke about what he thought of it.
“[It] was pretty fun,” Williams said. “The skits were all cool.”
Williams took part in one of the games, “dizzy bat.” In order to win, one must spin around a bat ten times and sprint to the finish line on the other side of the gym. Williams placed second after diving for the finish line just in time.
He also made this year’s Homecoming Court, along with two of his friends. The three of them were part of a long line of fellow Homecoming Court members who did special handshakes with each other. Williams and his friends did a handshake that was based on a play in basketball, while adding their own flair to it.
Homecoming Court is a traditional part of homecoming celebrations that CKHS puts on. It consists of a group of students whose peers nominate them based on who they think shows the most school spirit, and who has the most school participation and representation. Peers also look for who brings the best attitude and energy.
Overall, this year’s homecoming assembly got lots of attention and was a big hit among the students of CK. The student body waits patiently to see how the Homecoming Assembly will go next year.
