On April 1, Universal Studios released “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” a direct sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” released on April 5, 2023.
Both movies were based off of the Mario games Nintendo has released, such as “Super Mario 64,” “Yoshi’s Island,” and “Super Mario Galaxy.” However, the second movie brings more references from other Nintendo games such as “Donkey Kong,” “Pikmin,” and the classic game, “Star Fox.”
The second film, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” is filled with bright colors alongside attention to detail in every scene shown. Some details could be spotted with the stars as slight stardust radiating from each of the stars when close-up to the screen. Others are subtle and small, such as faint designs of the Comet Conservatory, a spaceship with galactic themes and different structures surrounding it, that was also resembling Princess Rosalina’s home.
When the full body of the conservatory came to sight, viewers could see each of the areas in full detail, such as the top of the spaceship, which had no meaning to the movie but was full of intricate details and designs.
Along with the details, the movie includes lots of fights among the characters to keep it funny and engaging. Some of the fights were funny such as two characters fighting over something ridiculous, such as Mario and Luigi fighting over the fact of whether or not Bowser should be set free. The other fights were meaningful and important to the plot, especially the fights including Mario saving the world from the villain, Bowser Jr.
To pair up with the fights, the music choice in this movie ranged from epic and thunderous to even sweet and majestic. The sweet music could be heard during exploration, such as discovering the Gateway Galaxy, a building that provides pathways to other galaxies, to revelation moments such as Princess Peach’s connection to Princess Rosalina by discovering they are sisters. The epic and thunderous music could be found during fight scenes, as well as any particular parts that showed the villains.
So far, Nintendo and Illumination have done a fantastic job at storytelling, detailing, and finding music which corresponds with the film’s plot. All this will surely set up for a third “Super Mario” movie, rumored to release in 2029 after a recent interview with Bowser’s voice actor, Jack Black.
