CKHS’ very own English/Theatre teacher Bryan Sullivan, who students refer to as “Sully,” hosted and produced Les Mis here at CKHS. Les Miserables, otherwise know as Les Mis, is a musical production written by playwright Alain Boublil. Senior Juan Balmedina said, “It was the best musical I have ever seen live.”

Opening night was held on November 19, followed by other showings on the 20th and twice on the 21st, one at 2pm and the other at 7pm. All three shows were sold out! Many people were surprised that this play was authorized, considering the vulgar language and lack of censorship. The play has scenes of drinking alcohol and even prostitution.

After being a prisoner for 19 years, Jean Valjean (Wesley Baldwin) is released and placed on parole by Javert (Tanya Emery), the officer in charge of the prison workforce. Valjean promptly breaks his parole and he steals silverware, and is almost arrested until the person he stole from, who was a priest, covers for him and says it was a gift.

Later, Valjean uses the money from the silver to reinvent himself and he soon becomes the mayor and a factory owner. Eight years later Valjean adopts a young girl, Cosette (Becca Dotson), after her mother dies. But Valjean is pursued by the relentless Javert who vows to put Valjean back in prison which causes many problems throughout his life.

The play first premiered in the year of 1985, October 8. The musical was based off of the original story written by French poet and novelist Victor Hugo. Les Mis was later re enacted in 2012 when it was made into a major motion picture.
