The wrestling team gets together for one last practice before their Hammer Head Tournament

Wrestling is a sport  of grappling with an opponent and trying to throw or hold them down on the ground, typically according to a code of rules. They use specific moves, such as single-leg take down, double-leg take down, arm drag, cradle, etc. The goal of wrestling is to win. How one wins is to either pin the opponent or get points throughout the match and at the end of three, two minute rounds, the most points, wins.

This year at CKHS, wrestling is in full swing. With a huge team, the future matches look promising. CK wrestling has three captains: Gage Mayer, Carsten Wheeler, and Brittani Smith. They also have Coach Mike Harter, who has been coaching at CK for 14 years and has been coaching wrestling for 38 years.

Harter has been interested in wrestling his entire life; he started out wrestling when he was six years old. “In high school, wrestling helped me with a lot of things. It helped me get through hard times and ever since then I wanted to help other kids get through hard times with wrestling, too,” Harter said.

The assistant coach is Adam Appleton, who graduated with the class of 2015, but during his high school and junior high years, he wrestled at CKJH and CKHS. He loved it so much he came back to help other kids.

There is also a manager, Hailey Stone, a junior who has been managing since 7th grade. She was interested in wrestling since she was little. Her brothers were both wrestlers and she used to come to practice. She makes passes, cleans mats, helps the boys with water bottles, etc. Stone is a key part of the wrestling team. Without her, nothing would get done, according to coaches.
