A new club has come to CKHS, ASL (American Sign Language) club. This club was created by American Sign Language teacher, Andrea Romano, and seniors Jennie McCallum, Austin Mullins, and Elena Stamerra. All of these students had been in ASL up to year four and still hadn’t had enough of it.

The club was created to give old students a place to sign with friends, and any student that didn’t sign up for the class an opportunity to learn a new language. When asked about the importance of ASL, Romano said, “There are so many times where I wish everyone knew how to sign. Not only would it help deaf people, but it’s very convenient to communicate long distances, underwater, in loud places, or in places where you are supposed to be quiet.”

ASL is the sixth most prominent language in the United States, an estimated two millions citizens cannot understand normal speech, roughly 500,000 of those use ASL. The club meets in room 308 every Monday after school. All students are encouraged to join for cookies and silent conversation.
