Review: Eliza McLamb (Is Not) ‘Doing Fine’

by Rosalie Johnson, Reporter, Editor-in-Chief
January 13, 2023
McLamb’s mental and social wisdom is comforting and aspirational. Her analytical metaphors, discernment, and talent excess - both in lyricism and singing - provide listeners with a new understanding of depression experiences or a new way to explain or understand one’s own depressive struggle. Her delicate, dynamic, and commanding voice and tone is soothing to the mind and ear; McLamb and those with her skill are entirely necessary and completely welcome in modern environments in which we are all living.

The OL Reign’s Journey to Higher Recognition

by Rosalie Johnson, Reporter, Editor-in-Chief
May 19, 2022
Growing up as a female soccer player meant that I had little major professional representation. At the time, there were only 8 teams within the National Women’s Soccer League (the NWSL), and those teams were poorly promoted by advertisers, companies and even the cities the NWSL teams were home to. Though this was demeaning to female athletes and detrimental to their successes, it forced me to value the representation I was provided with with all of the appreciation and love I could muster, and it further developed the sense of connection and solidarity with the female athletes.

The depression that teens and young adults are enduring from their concerns about their future, the isolation of the pandemic, and the stress of school is real; to this point, the pure pain and emotion of this song resonates all too well with kids around the globe. Though it was intentionally written for the purpose of surviving heartbreak, it has successfully initiated a movement within teens and pop culture that allows for a liberating release of the pain that has been built up over the course of the pandemic and the tension of America’s political climate.

The Emotions Behind The 2020 Presidential Election

by Rosalie Johnson, Reporter, Editor-in-Chief
January 20, 2021
Around 8 a.m. on November 7, the light outside my bedroom window woke me up, and out of habit, I reached over to check my phone. My heart immediately dropped and a sharp thrust of adrenaline jolted through my body as I realized that Biden had won. It was the most surreal, serotonin-filled moment of my life. It felt like I could fully breathe for the first time, like a massive weight had been lifted off my shoulders and heart. All of the fear and anger and sadness and exhaustion I had been carrying didn’t go away permanently, but it was certainly the last thing on my mind that morning, as I lay in my bed underneath the sheets, tears streaming down my face, texting my best friends in all caps.
